IRBEK ZHURGENOV (1898-1939) a political and public figure.

He was born in Irgiz municipality of Aktobe Oblast. He graduated from the Russian-Kazakh secondary school, then Sukhansky Russian-Kazakh Academy in Perovsk. In 1917 he entered the land survey academy in Ufa but the civil war interrupted his study.

T. Zhurgenov actively participated in preparation to the regional congress of Soviets and worked in Kazakh Muny newspaper. He fought against white guards, chaired the Revolutionary Committee in Kenzhar Volost. in 1920-1921 he is the deputy, then chairman of Irgiz district executive committee.

In 1923 he graduated from Orenburg University and was sent to the Central Asian State University in 1927. During 1924-1926 he was an authorized representative of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic in the Republic of Turkestan. He takes an active part in preparation to the national-state separation of the Central Asia and Kazakhstan.

T. Zhurgenov gathered a lot of statistic and demographical material, studied literary and archived sources. In 1926-1929 he was appointed as rector for Tashkent Kazakh Teacher's Institute, and then he was elected to the Central Executive Committee of Kazakhstan and Turkestan.

He was arrested on August 3, 1937 on false accusation and was shot dead. On April, 1957 he was rehabilitated. Kazakh National Art Academy in Almaty received his name.
