VIENNA. February 24. KAZINFORM The success of Kazakhstan's chairmanship of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe was based on the solid foundation laid by the previous presiding countries, Chairman of the Majilis Committee for International Relations, Defense and Security Maulen Ashimbayev said at a meeting of the Military and Political Affairs Committee of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly at the Hofburg Palace on February 23.

"In the military-political dimension the Astana Declaration recognizes that in today's complex and interdependent world, we need to achieve a greater unity of purpose and action to confront the modern transnational threats such as terrorism, organized crime, illegal migration, drug trafficking, human trafficking and other," Ashimbayev noted.

The Kazakh parliamentarian noted that the interaction with Afghanistan should strengthen its relevance and remain on the agenda of the OSCE in connection with the transfer of all responsibility for the situation in the country to the government of this country, as well as in connection with the planned withdrawal of troops of the International Security Assistance Force in 2014.

He expressed hope for implementation of the projects in non-military aspects of the first dimension of the OSCE - a framework document on policing, the OSCE strategies on combating illicit drug trafficking, activities in the field of cyber security, determination of anti-terrorism mandate. He also said that Kazakhstan considered important the establishment of the department of the OSCE on combating transnational threats.
