BEIJING. February 17. KAZINFORM. A new study shows that taking zinc supplements may shorten the length of a cold, media reports said Thursday.

According to Xinhuanet, the study was published by the Cochrane Library, an international network of experts who conduct systematic reviews of research.

Researchers at a medical school in India found that patients who took zinc in a syrup or lozenge form within 24 hours of showing symptoms shortened their cold by about a day.

Taking zinc consistently for five months or more can help people avoid colds, they said, but warning zinc has side effects, like a metallic taste in the mouth or nausea.

The researchers added they still don't have a clear recommendation on how much zinc people should take to get the benefits.

The study was based on 13 trials with 966 participants who either took zinc or a dummy treatment at the beginning of their symptoms.
