In 1989, Kazakhstan Commerce regional foreign economic association was established. It is the first Kazakhstani company with the rights of all-Union foreign trade associations in terms of exporting a wide range of Kazakhstan-made products and importing goods from any country in the world.

In 1995, President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev issued a decree, according to which Akmola became the capital of the country.

In 2001, Nursultan Nazarbayev visited the U.S. Embassy in Almaty and expressed his condolences to the American nation over the tragic events in Washington and New York that killed thousands of U.S. citizens. He made the official statement condemning the inhuman terrorist acts. The Head of State expressed Kazakhstan's readiness to render any assistance in capturing and punishing terrorists.

In 2005, President Nursultan Nazarbayev decreed to sign, on behalf of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism.

Signing the Magna Charta Universitatum in 2010, the Kazakh University of Economics (now NARXOZ University) entered the European educational space.

In 2011, the Bukei Khan Mausoleum was constructed in the village of Maly Aral in Krasnoyarsk district, Astrakhan Oblast, Russian Federation. This was made by the instruction of President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev in honor of the centuries-old friendship of the peoples of Russia and Kazakhstan.

In 2016, Almaty hosted an exhibition of photographs dedicated to the life and work of Batyrkhan Shukenov, a legendary Kazakh singer.

The same day ‘Taraz' film made by Nurtas Adambayev won the Best Drama Feature and Best Cinematography awards at the Genre Celebration Film Festival in Los Angeles.

In 2017, Kazakhstan's Paralympic canoeist Zhalgas Taikenov struck gold at the Open Asian Cup in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.
