ANOV OMIRBEK (1906-1993) is a soil scientist, candidate of geological and mineralogical sciences, academician of the Kazakhstan's Academy of Science, honored worker of science, founder of soil science in Kazakhstan.

He was born in Kostanay region in 1906. O. Ospanov graduated from Moscow K. Timiryazev Agricultural Academy and postgraduate school of V. Dokuchayev Soil Research Institute. In 1936-1939 he is a junior and senior researcher for the Kazakh Department of the USSR Academy of Science. In 1939-1942 he is a director of Zhezkazgan regional agricultural research station. In 1943-1945 he is a director of the Agrology and Botanic Institute. Since 1946 till the end of his life he is a research worker of the Agrology Institute of the Kazakhstan's Science of Academy.

O. Ospanov studied genesis , geography, soil classification, developed methods of quality system including scientific bases for rational use and rising of soil quality in Kazakhstan. He headed work on land capability classification, soil maps of the regions and republics, serial monographs on soil of the administrative regions. His recommendations on gypsuming of the black alkali soil, genesis and melioration of dry-type playa are widely used in practice.

He was awarded with Order of Lenin, Red Banner of Labor and Badge of Honor. His name was enlisted into the Gold Book of Honor of Kazakhstan. The agrology institute was named in his honor.
