ASTANA. April 21. KAZINFORM A three-day OSCE-supported training for Kazakhstani prosecutors on overseeing the implementation of international agreements began on Wed.

Some 20 prosecutors from across Kazakhstan participate in the event. The seminar aims to deepen the prosecutors' theoretical and practical knowledge of mutual legal assistance in criminal matters in accordance with international agreements and international criminal law norms.

Participants will also discuss the fulfillment of extradition requests and international co-operation on trans-border crimes. Experts from the General Prosecutor's Office of the Russian Federation will share good practices in using modern technologies for investigating drug trafficking cases.

"The OSCE Centre strongly supports the Office of the General Prosecutor's initiative to train officers, especially those from the regions, on such issues as mutual legal assistance. At the same time, while exercising its oversight functions, it is critical that prosecutors take into account the broader human rights context," said Jeanette Kloetzer, the Deputy Head of the OSCE Centre in Astana.

Zhumabai Shamshiyev, the Director of the Institute of the Prosecutor General, said: "This training will improve prosecutors' ability to handle criminal cases that require co-operation with foreign countries. We will continue to train our officers so they will be prepared to deal with crimes that have an international component."

The seminar is the first in a series planned for 2011. All of the training courses will be organized by the OSCE Centre in close co-operation with the Prosecutor General's Professional Training Institute, the press service of the OSCE Centre in Astana reports.
