ISTANBUL. April 26. KAZINFORM Experts and officials last week discussed recent developments in Kazakhstan and its future at a workshop in İstanbul, where the Central Asian republic's ties with Turkey were also reaffirmed.

Istanbul University hosted a workshop on Thursday called "Kazakhstan Vision on the 20th Anniversary of its Independence," organized by the Dialogue Eurasia Platform (DAP) and Kazakhstan's Istanbul consulate. Academics, Kazakh Ambassador Canseyit Tuymebayev, DAP Co-chair Harun Tokak and Inter-parliamentary Friendship Group chair and Justice and Development Party (AK Party) Yozgat deputy Mehmet Çiçek were among the participants of the workshop.

During the workshop experts and officials discussed the latest presidential elections in Kazakhstan, its political transformation and recent reforms, the country's vision for the future and the former Soviet republic's role in Central Asia. Speaking at the event, Tokak explained how Kazakhstan has already passed several bumps on its path and today has reached a "bright" stage in its development, adding that the Central Asian republic, with its leader and people, continues to be a shining star in the region and the world, Kazinform refers to Today's Zaman.

Çiçek said Turkey has always attached a special importance to Kazakhstan and recalled that Turkey was the first country to recognize the former Soviet republic in 1991. He also stated that Kazakhstan is an ever-growing and developing star in the East, noting that the country has been in cooperation with Turkey since it gained its independence and that it has benefited from Turkey's experience in various fields.

In his speech the Kazakh ambassador said Kazakhstan is among 60 developing countries in the world with its improving economy and underground resources. The ambassador added that the outcome of the April 3 presidential election in Kazakhstan is a result of the success that the country celebrates on its 20th anniversary.

Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev won a landslide victory in the presidential election on April 3. Tuymebayev also said Kazakhstan's relations with Turkey have improved with each year over the past 20 years and that investment in education has largely contributed to this cooperation.
