Kazakhstan celebrates one of the major national holidays - Victory Day

ASTANA. May 9. KAZINFORM – Today Kazakhstan is celebrating one of the most important national holidays – the Victory Day in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945. Nursultan Nazarbayev, the Kazakh President will take part in the ceremony of laying flowers to the monument of "Otan korgaushylary" in Astana. On the sports fields there will be organized relay races and tournaments; on the stages of theaters and open-air scenes there will be playing brass bands and ensembles.

People of every location of the republic have been celebrating the holiday for several days already, carrying out awarding, charity events titled "In memory of the fallen be worthy", "I remember you! I'm proud of you!", "St. George Ribbon" and many others.

The day before, on May 7, Kazakhstanis celebrated the Day of the Defender of the Motherland for the first time in the history of the republic. Many have noted the regularity of the two state holidays - the Day of the Defender of the Motherland and the Victory Day. This shows the continuity of the military traditions of our fathers who won in the World War II and the current generation of defenders of the Motherland.

We are moving further away from May 9, 1945 but everyone of us know and remember what price our fathers and grandfathers paid for the victory. Every Kazakh citizen celebrates this holiday considering it as a symbol of love for Motherland.

Hundreds of thousands of Kazakh people went to the battlefields of the Great Patriotic War. More than 600,000 of Kazakh soldiers did not return from the war.

There was no fighting on the territory of Kazakhstan but the republic has become a reliable rear to the battlefield providing its ammunition and food. Thousands of people, hundreds of businesses, many research and educational institutions in Moscow, Leningrad, Kiev and other cities have been evacuated to the Kazakh land.

Twelve Kazakh divisions that have passed through the entire war received the honorary titles. Five divisions have become guards including the famous 8th Guards Division named in honor of the Hero of the Soviet Union I.Panfilov. During the Great Patriotic War 497 Kazakh soldiers were awarded Title of Hero of the Soviet Union. The final title of the Hero of the Soviet Union was awarded on December 11, 1990 to the legendary Bauyrzhan Momyshuly. Four citizens of Kazakhstan, the attack aircraft pilots T.Bigeldinov, L.Beda, I.Pavlov and fighter pilot S.Lugansky, have been twice awarded the Golden Star of the Hero of the Soviet Union.

Among Heroes are women - Manshuk Mametova, the machine gunner, and Alia Moldagulova, the sniper. Both girls were killed in fighting. Ranks of Heroes were also assigned to the shooters S.Baymagambetov, S.Lutfullin, Ming Sen Yur, T.Tohtarov, artillery men S.Mutkenov and I.Novikov, pilots N.Abdirov, P.Miller the anti-tank riflemen, K.Sypataev – the mortar gunner, M.Karataevu – the horse military man, P.Karataev and P.Goncharov the deminers, M.Gabdullin the political instructor, B.Uschev – the commander of the torpedo boat, G.Safiullin - the commander of the infantry division etc.

Among those who stormed the Reichstag and hoisted the flag of victory over him, were R.Koshkarbaev, Captain B.Chupreta, A.Baktygereev the mortar gunner, P.Vitsko the machine gunner and K.Volochaev the wireman.

Victory Day is a special holiday and it has the most honorable position forever!
