The Turkestan-Siberian Railway was commissioned on January 1, 1931. It connected Central Asia with Siberia boosting economy and the development of working class of Kazakhstan.

Shalkar Radio went on air on January 1, 1966. The radio broadcasts in the Kazakh language only. It's main concept is to preserve and develop spiritual heritage of the Kazakh people.

Oner publishing house opened on this day in 1980. It publishes books about history, culture and arts of Kazakhstan, textbooks, photo albums, posters, postcards and brochures.

KIMEP (or Kazakhstan Institute of Management Economy and Forecasting) under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan was established on January 1, 1992. For many years, KIMEP remains one of the leaders of higher education in Kazakhstan and Central Asia.

The "Aktau Seaport" special economic zone was launched on January 1 in 2003. Its territory consists of six separate land plots with total area of 2,000 ha. It has its own legal regime and all enterprises functioning on its territory are exempt from tax and customs payments.

On this day in 2009, Kazakhstan become a part of the FSC Troika of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

The Troika is the main consultative body of the OSCE Chairmanship comprised of the former, present and incoming Chairmanships. The Forum for Security Cooperation focuses on the politico-military dimension of security, including the confidence- and security-building measures that were first outlined in the 1975 Helsinki Final Act and further developed in the CSCE and OSCE.

On January 1, 2016, Kazakhstan started its chairmanship in the Eurasian Economic Union. President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev chaired the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council.

Kazakhstan official became a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council on January 1, 2017. The Kazakh flag was displayed at the UN headquarters in New York. The first session with the participation of all 15 members of the UNSC took place on January 3.
