ASTANA. January 30. KAZINFORM Kazakhstan's Human Rights Commissioner Askar Shakirov, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Norway Dag M. Halvorsen and UNICEF Deputy Representative Radoslaw Rzehak agreed on implementation of a new joint project on strengthening child protection system in Kazakhstan. The Parties signed a joint Statement of Intent in confirmation of their partnership.

Activities envisaged under the joint project include conducting assessment of the state of vulnerable children in urban areas and a study on the issue of violence in schools. Mechanisms will be developed to render assistance to children whose rights are violated and not fully met. In addition, measures will be taken to improve the relevant legislation to meet current challenges, the press service of the UNICEF in Kazakhstan reports.

It was also announced during the press-conference about adoption by the UN General Assembly of the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on a communications procedure that allows submitting complaints on violation of children's rights directly to the Committee on the Rights of the Child. The new mechanism compliments existing national mechanisms on protection of children's rights.
