ECE policy on intellectual property becomes more focused on international system - T.Suleimenov

ASTANA. April 15. KAZINFORM - Timur Suleimenov, the Collegiate member (Minister) for Economic and Financial Policy of the Eurasian Economic Commission, met with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) General Director Francis Gary in Geneva, the ECE press service reports.

The sides discussed prospects of cooperation regarding the defense and protection of intellectual property rights, recognizing the utmost importance of urgent tasks solution in the field of the XXI century intellectual property for the development of economic and cultural cooperation between the two countries.

The parties gave consideration for the possibility of signing a partnership memorandum between the ECE and the WIPO, which would include concrete forms of collaboration and define the relations development vector based on the competence of the ECE as a supranational regulatory body for the Customs Union (CU) and the Common Economic Space (CES). Following the meeting it was agreed to grant the ECE an observer status and start preparation for the draft memorandum issue.

According to T.Suleimenov after signing the memo the ECE policy on intellectual property will become more aimed at the rules of the international system. "We hope that the WIPO authority among the Member States of CU and CES and the organization experience on cooperation with the European Union will strengthen the constructive engagement spirit in the formation of our regional policy for protection and enforcement of intellectual property," ECE representative remarked.

It is assumed that the ECE and CU member states with the participation of WIPO plan to identify a road map for improving the legislation in this area for the next stage of integration, the creation of the Eurasian Economic Union.
