EVENTS

The Virgin lands region featuring the Akmolinsk, Kokchetavsk, Kostanay, Pavlodar and North Kazakhstan oblasts with the administrative center in the town of Tselinograd (called Akmolinsk until 1961) was formed on this day in 1960. It was abolished five years later on October 19 in 1965.

Pervyye (Firsts) play based on the play by Russian-German writer Alexander Raimgen about the relations between Kazakhs and Germans unveiled the Republican German Drama Theater on December 26 in 1980.

On this day in 1991, the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Unites States established diplomatic relations, making the US the third country after Turkey and Russia to recognize Kazakhstan's independence after the collapse of the USSR.

On December 26, four years later, Kazakhstan passed the Constitutional Law "On the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan" outlining the legal status of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan in line with the Constitution of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

A new madrassa was unveiled on the territory of the central mosque on December 26 in 2005 in Semey. Uzbek builders with extensive experience in construction of religious buildings in Russia and Astana needed a year to erect the madrassa. Construction materials were imported from Uzbekistan.

The same day, a mosque named after Khazret Mukhambetkazy Mendikulov was inaugurated in Aktobe region. Khazret who lived in late 19th century in Akkemir village was a renowned educator who left his mark in history and repeatedly undertook hadj to Mecca. He was received by the Russian tsar personally and obtained the permission to open a school in Akkemir.

A monument to composer and distinguished teacher of the Republic of Kazakhstan Naseken Suleimenov was unveiled in Karakol village in West Kazakhstan region on December 26 in 2008.

Revised version of Korsar ballet premiered at the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation in Astana on this day in 2009. President Nursultan Nazarbayev attended the premiere. The new revised version was developed by Yuri Grigorovich for the Kulyash Baiseitova National Opera and Ballet Theater.

On this day in 2011, the Head of State signed the Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan "On marriage (matrimony) and family" called to systematize and improve marriage legislation given modern approaches to settlement of marriage and family issues.

The Supreme Court of the Republic of Kazakhstan arranged a charity campaign Dobro ot serdtsa (Kindness from the heart) on December 26, 2012. It was initiated by then Chairman of the Supreme Court Bektas Beknazarov to help large families in need.

On December 26, 2014, the Days of Documentaries themed Through the centuries to independence kicked off in Karaganda city. The first documentary screened that day was Ondassyn Tastanov's Ulytau torinde based on President Nursultan Nazarbayev's reflections at the foot of Ulytau mountains.

The largest antituberculosis dispensary in the country was opened in Astana on December 26 in 2016. It is located in Zheleznodorozhniy village and consists of nine units. Construction began in 2008.

The same day, Kazakhstan and Russia signed the Cooperation Concept at the Baikonur space complex within the framework of President Nursultan Nazarbayev's visit to Saint-Petersburg. As per the concept, the sides agreed to jointly develop (modernize) the infrastructure of the space complex and Baikonur city, attract investment, create new workplaces, construct housing, develop tourism, and more. But, most importantly, Astana and Moscow reached agreement to implement new joint space projects, especially the Baiterek one.
