On this day in 1930 Mendykarin district in the northern part of Kostanay region and Aksu district in the north-east of Almaty region were formed.

Riots broke out on this day in 1986 in Alma-Ata (present-day Almaty) when Kazakh youth took to the streets to protest the USSR General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev's dismissal of Dinmukhamed Kunayev, the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan and an ethnic Kazakh, and appointment of Gennady Kolbin, an outsider from the Russian SFSR.

Participants of the peaceful rally demanded the appointment of a representative of Kazakh indigenous population as the head of the republic. The December events in Kazakhstan became one of the first mass protests in the USSR against the dictate of the center.

On December 17, 2003, the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev signed the decree On the introduction of the moratorium on the death penalty in the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The decree suspended death penalty in the country, however, did not prohibit the courts from adjudging death sentences. Since 2004 life imprisonment is used as an alternative capital punishment in Kazakhstan.

A monument to famous Kazakh artist Abilkhan Kasteev was installed at the local arts college, which also bears his name, on December 17, 2009.

Abilkhan Kasteev (1904-1973) was a famous Kazakh watercolorist painter. The National Artist of Kazakh SSR, and The Laureate of the Chokan Valikhanov State Premium of the Kazakh SSR he stood at the origins of Kazakh fine arts. Some of his works are on display in the State Tretyakov Gallery, State Museum of East Nations Art, in the Central Museum of USSR Revolution by Lenin Order in Moscow, and in the State Museum of Fine Arts of Kazakhstan, which is also renamed after him.

On December 17, 2012, Kazakh Embassy in Turkey opened a children's center on the basis of the Foundation of Kazakhs in Turkey.

The new center was gifted Kazakh language, history and literature teaching materials, as well Kazakh-styled toys.

The Alley of Labor Glory was opened on December 17, 2012, in the center of Pavlodar. The architectural composition is dedicated to the residents of the region, who made a significant contribution to its social and economic development.

In 2014, Kazakhstan entered the QS World University Rankings.

The Mothers' House opened on December 17, 2014, in Petropavlovsk.

The non-governmental foundation Mothers' House is helping women and their children in a difficult life situation.

On this day in 2016, Kazakhstani Gulzhanat Zhanatbek won the 21 km distance at the SCO marathon in Kunming.
