ALMATY. February 17. KAZINFORM Presentation of a new regional project on climate risk management in Kazakhstan will be held in Almaty on Feb 22. The workshop will allow discussing the issues of climate change and climate-related risks, as well as the impact on key economic sectors. UNDP experts will present an assessment of a vulnerability of different regions of Kazakhstan to climate-related risks and outline the strategies to manage climate-risks at the national level.

It's estimated that most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change are the southern regions of the country, in particular - Almaty region, the area where climate change has already manifested itself in such consequences, as change of a water flow in the mountain rivers, degradation of glaciers and water resources, increases of extreme weather events taking place over the region: strong heat, droughts, dusty storms, etc. This region is also vulnerable to the extreme hydro meteorological events, such as avalanching, mudslides, flooding, etc. Potential losses from destructive force of erosion (mudflows) in Almaty area by estimates of experts can reach 1125 thous. USD.

To face these challenges, it is necessary to develop and introduce effective climate-risk management strategies. New project «Climate risk management in Kazakhstan» is aimed to develop successful climate-risk management strategies in Kazakhstan. The focus of the project is increasing the resilience of local communities in Almaty area to adapt to the climate variability and climate risks through efficient water resource management in agriculture and decreasing the risk of natural hazards occurrence.

Representatives of the key ministries and agencies, NGO and scientific research institutes, international and national experts will attend the inception workshop. Also representatives of adjacent Central-Asian countries will take part in the event to discuss regional perspectives on the issue, the UNDP press release reads.
