BOTAGAI MAUSOLEUM

agai Mausoleum is an architectural monument of XI-XII centuries. It is located on the left bank of Nura River in Kurgalzhinsky municipality at the 2 km to East from Korgalzhyn village of Akmola region.

The mausoleum was firstly mentioned in the works of Peter Rychkov in the middle of XVIII century. The first short description of the mausoleum was made by the expedition of Ivan Shangin in 1816. Like other researchers I. Shangin considered the mausoleum as remains of ancient town Tatigay (Bytygay).

The information about the mausoleum was also found in the works of G. Spassky (1818-1824), A. Shakhmatov (1831), A. Levshin (1832), I. Kastanye (1910), L. Semyonov (1930). Botagay Grave was mentioned in the works of Sh. Valikhanov (1855). In 1949 the mausoleum was studied by the Central-Kazakhstan Archeological Expedition of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR headed by Alkey Margulan.

In 1974 the Central-Kazakhstan Archeological Expedition of the Academy of Sciences headed by A. Margulan made archeological excavation of the mausoleum.

In 2006 the mausoleum was studied by the research department and project affiliate of Kazrestavratsiya Republican State Enterprise headed by Gulnara Kamalova.
