The first issue of Vecherniy Almaty newspaper saw the light on January 2, 1968. Over all these years, the newspaper made a significant cultural contribution to the development of one of the biggest cities in Kazakhstan.

The Engineering Academy of the Republic of Kazakhstan was established on January 2, 1992. Academician Zholdasbekov was elected its first President.

On January 2, 1992, the Kingdom of Norway recognized independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Kazakhstan became a member of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) on the same day in 1992. It is to be recalled that in 2010 Kazakhstan assumed the chairmanship of the organization.

On January 2, 2010, 16-ya liniya Street in Bostandyk district of Almaty city was named after Turganbek Katayev. Turganbek Katayev is a prominent statesman and public figure of Kazakhstan. He held the post of the Education Ministry of Kazakhstan in 1974-1983. A memorial plaque was installed on the house where he lived in Almaty city in 2009.
