ASTANA. KAZINFORM - Kazinform's Timeline is the one-stop shop where you can learn about historical events for the 8th of December. See what notable events happened throughout Kazakhstan's history on December 8.


In 1930, the Red Army's punitive detachments inflicted a crushing defeat on the Kazakh people's militia involved in the uprising in Kozhebai, Aktobe region. In historical records, the rebellion is mentioned as "Sarbazdar Koterilіsі". 12 leaders of the rebellion were sentenced to death. Another 13 people were exiled, and over 163 were held liable to various fines.

In 1991, the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) was founded by Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine. In the Agreement Establishing the CIS signed on December 8, 1991 in Minsk, the states announced that the USSR, amid severe crisis and dissolution, ceased to exist and declared their desire to promote cooperation in the political, economic, humanitarian, cultural, and other areas. On December 21, 1991, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, which signed in Alma-Ata the Declaration on the CIS Purposes and Principles together with Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine, joined the Agreement.

Kazpost JSC conducted the exhibitions of postage stamps of the Republic of Poland dedicated to the memory of Pope John Paul II in the cities of Kazakhstan in 2005. The first exhibition started in the Almaty Post Office building in Almaty city. Exhibitions were organized to promote stamp collecting and cultural exchange with postal administrations of other countries.

In 2009, the ceremony of opening the Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Kazakhstan was held in Osaka, Japan. Mr. Shiro Kawashita, Corporate Vice President of the world-famous Toshiba Corporation, was named Honorary Consul. The Honorary Consulate of Kazakhstan in Osaka aims to enhance trade, economic, cultural, and humanitarian cooperation between Kazakhstan and Japan.

In 2010, the documentary film Kochevnik Vselennoy (The Nomad of the Universe) dedicated to the history of Kazakhstan's space was shown at the Conference Hall of the National Space Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The film tells about the career of the pilot cosmonaut, Hero of Russia and Halyk Kaharmany (Hero of Kazakhstan), the Chairman of the National Space Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan Talgat Mussabayev. The film highlights the role of President Nursultan Nazarbayev in shaping the country's space industry as in the path of the cosmonaut of sovereign Kazakhstan.

The same day the Warsaw University of Technology in Poland hosted a photo exhibition Untold Stories about the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site. The large-size archive photos of the exhibition showed Warsaw students not only the chronology of the nuclear explosions at the test site, but also told about the extents and terrible consequences of the nuclear experiments in the Cold War period, the tragedy of the region's people, the first steps of the anti-nuclear movement "Nevada-Semipalatinsk", the peaceful global initiatives of Kazakhstan, and the process of closing the Semipalatinsk Test Site, the world's largest nuclear test site.

Also, that very day, a memorial devoted to the soldiers of Zhambyl region, who were killed in the Second Rzhev-Sychevka Offensive Operation code-named "Operation Mars", one of the fiercest and bloodiest battles of the Great Patriotic War, was unveiled in the Zhenis Park (Victory Park) in Taraz. The memorial consists of 45 double-sided commemorative plaques inscribed with the list of all Zhambyl soldiers who fought in Operation Mars. Besides, there are capsules with the earth from the battlefield put under the memorial.

In 2011, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan, President Nursultan Nazarbayev opened a new campus of the Zhas Ulan Republican Military School named after Army General Sagadat Nurmagambetov in Astana. The school provides its students with in-depth study of the state and foreign languages, as well as military disciplines, and enhanced physical education. The new building of the school consists of 7 pavilions with an area of over 24,000 sqm.

Visiting the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University in Almaty, Head of State Nursultan Nazarbayev unveiled a diagnostic and treatment center, where teachers and students can get health care services in 2014. The center has various types of hi-tech equipment.

In 2015, the Kazakh State Academic Music and Drama Theater named after Kalibek Kuanyshbayev from Astana won Zolotoy Vityaz (Golden Knight) award at the 13th International Theater Festival held in Moscow. At the festival, the Kazakh theater showed the performance of Letyat Zhuravli, a famous drama based on Solovyinaya Noch by Russian playwright Valentin Yezhov.

In 2016, the European Commission excluded all Kazakhstani airlines from the list of banned airlines - the list of the airlines which do not conform to the international air safety standard.

The same day, students of Henrico Schools performed Ush Konyr, a song co-written by President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev and composer Altynbek Korazbayev, at the reception on the occasion of 25 years of Kazakhstan's independence in Washington, D.C.

That day, December 8, 2016, on the threshold of Kazakhstan's Independence Day, the image of the Kazakh national flag was projected on the building of Sheraton Grand Doha Resort and Convention Hotel as a sign of deep respect and genuine friendship between Qatar and Kazakhstan.
