In 1979, the Tengiz oil field was discovered in West Kazakhstan. There, the first well produced oil from a pre-salt layer at a depth of 4045-4095 meters.

In 1992, the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan "On Social Protection of the Citizens Affected by Nuclear Tests at the Semipalatinsk Test Site" was adopted. It establishes the status of the citizens and the classification of the territories affected by multi-nuclear explosions. The Law specifies the list of compensations and benefits, as well as measures for socio-economic development of the territories.

In 2010, Kazakhstan, represented by the National Space Research and Technology Center of the National Space Agency, became a full member of Sentinel Asia international project aimed at combating natural disasters via remote sensing of the Earth and GIS-WEB-technologies in the Asian region.

Zaman, a Turkish major daily newspaper, published a special issue Kazakhstan entirely dedicated to the 23rd Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan in 2014. The special issue contains articles and information materials on Kazakhstan's achievements, the main provisions of the Address of the Kazakh President to the Nation of Kazakhstan, preparations for the Expo 2017, and the peculiarities of Astana, the capital of the country. The articles are mainly about the achievements of Kazakhstan over the years of Independence.

The same day Kazakhstan has taken over the CIS Chairmanship succeeding Belarus. In the year of the Chairmanship, Kazakhstan focused its efforts to implement the then decisions and agreements, strengthening the CIS authority in the international arena including as a political platform where the heads of the Commonwealth Member States can discuss any hot-button issues and take decisions regarding them.

In 2016, speed skater Nurbergen Zhumagaziyev from Uralsk, West Kazakhstan region, won the Men's 1000m race at the ISU Short Track Speed Skating World Cup in Gangneung, Republic of Korea. Zhumagaziyev covered the distance in 1:26.069.

Having beaten Ukraine, South Korea, and Poland, the Kazakhstan national team won the Euro Ice Hockey Challenge the same day.

Also that day last year, Muna Fuad Makhamreh, a Jordanian writer and political figure, issued her book Kazakhstan: The Symphony of Pain and Hope dedicated to the 25th Anniversary of Kazakhstan's independence and the closure of the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site. In addition to the Semipalatinsk Test Site, the chapters of the book are dedicated to other periods of the modern history of Kazakhstan.
